PERCY IN RACE TO COACH UGANDA WOMEN
MBABANE – Denver Sundowns Under-19 Coach Percy Shongwe has shown interest in coaching Uganda’s women national team.
Shongwe shared that he applied for a vacancy, as he boasted experience under his belt. From last year, he formed part of Denver Sundowns’ technical bench, where he had the job of an assistant coach, aiding Fani Sithole as interim coaches. However, Shongwe did not land himself in such prestigious positions as he started off his professional career at Red Lions Football Club from 2009-2011.
Worth mentioning is that Shongwe was the first coach to take Manzini Wanderers Ladies to the CAF, where he was the head coach at the time. He mentioned that the Uganda women’s national team representatives reached out to him after he submitted his CV. “When I submitted my CV, I did not wait too long before they reached out to me asking for me to provide my expected remuneration precisely in US Dollars, my mobile cell number as well as my years of experience,” expressed Shongwe.
He was excited to highlight that he was the only coach from Eswatini, who had been shortlisted, with two other internationals he was not familiar with. The gaffer’s experience has not only afforded him opportunities in Uganda but in our neighbouring country as well. “I also applied for a vacancy at Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) under the women football code and I impressed them as well. Because of their urgency, they said a work permit would take a long time. They said they could contact me next year,” highlighted Shongwe. Percy mentioned that such opportunities came along once in a lifetime hence he would not hesitate to grab them with both hands.
Percy also cited his educational experience within football, mentioning that he was a holder of CAF B and C licences since 2016. He obtained Licence D in 2010. He has a Level II Licence for the FIFA Women Coaching; Level II for FIFA Youth coaching; and an advanced level in FIFA Fitness Coaching.
