EX-BULL SKIPPER NOW A COUNCILLOR
MBABANE – Former national team Sihlangu and Mbabane Highlanders defender Sipho ‘City’ Sibandze is now a councillor.
Sibandze, who at one point in his career with the black and white capital city giants was together with now Hhohho Regional Super League outfit Sidwashini United trainer Mbaya Katala, led the ‘Bull’ in a league game against Young Buffaloes. This was in the absence of then head Coach Zonke Mawelela, who was bereaved in the 2008/2009 season. The player was running for the 2023 Local Government Election and has won as a councillor under Ward 4 in Matsapha.

He is not the only football personality, who won in the Local Government Elections, which were held this past Saturday in different cities and towns across the country. Also making it as a new councillor is Mbabane Swallows marshal Simphiwe Dlamini, who will represent the people of Siteki Town Council Ward 3. Meanwhile, top football administrator in Premier League of Eswatini (PLE) Football Manager Pat Vilakati, unfortunately could not make it as a councillor under Malkerns Town Board. The former PLE Chief Operations Officer (COO) was contesting in Ward 5 and he was beaten by Kevin Charles for the position. Charles is a former Denver Sundowns player and son to former elite league side Hellenic Coach Rodney ‘Stumbo’ Charles.

Other notable football personalities who could not make the cut in the 2023 Local Government Elections, were former Milling Hot Spurs Communications Officer Muzi ‘Chido’ Mlotsa, who was contesting in Manzini Ward 3. It was the case with erstwhile Midas Mbabane City lanky midfielder Thamsanqa Dlamini alongside Umbelebele official Mfansibili ‘Bibi’ Mazibuko.
