EZULWINI – Green Mamba duo of midfielder Mxolisi Mkhonto and Head Coach Ernest Mavuso have emerged as the MTN Premier League’s best for the 2022/23 campaign.

This was during the MTN Premier League of Eswatini (PLE) Awards, which were held yesterday at Sibane Sami Hotel in Ezulwini yesterday.Mkhonto, for his achievement became E15 000 richer, while the Green Mamba mentor took home E10 000. Mxolisi was shortlisted for the player of the season gong alongside teammate Njabulo Thwala and Mbabane Swallows’ Felix Badenhorst.  The latter was the top goal scorer with 20 goals. The mentors’ award was contested by three shortlisted coaches and these were Madlenya’s William Gamedze, Young Buffaloes’ Mandla ‘Stofu’ Dlamini and Mavuso who eventually won it. Dlamini steered Buffaloes to second place with an unbeaten run in 26 games. In the player of the year award, the fans had already spoken and vouched for Mkhonto to win it and he deservedly won it. He was instrumental in inspiring his side to winning the MTN Premier League, as he scored crucial goals and provided numerous assists. His splendid display this season got him a national team call-up and also attracted interest from DStv Premiership side Royal AM.

Meanwhile, Mavuso’s award can also never be doubted because of how he changed Green Mamba to play good football and coupled with good results, which saw them winning the title. When he was relieved of his duties at Highlanders, he had not lost a single game. He deservedly walked away with the award. Mkhonto said this was a big achievement for him.
“I would not claim personal glory here as I believe from commissioner general, management, technical bench and to the players, played a huge role in me winning the award. This is a huge achievement for me and I am so excited about it. I have to work extra hard and hopefully I get noticed,” said Mkhonto. He said he was aware that this award would open many opportunities and he would have to handle them with both hands. “Right now I am focused on Sihlangu and the offer at Royal AM. I hope to do well at national team level and also at Royal AM when I go for the second phase of assessment,” he added.Meanwhile, Mavuso said Green Mamba rescued his career. “This award means a lot to me. This somehow takes my game to another level. I want to thank MTN and those responsible for selecting the awards for recognising me. I would like to thank Green Mamba; they rescued my career,” said Mavuso.
