MBABANE – In the latest rankings released by the world football governing body, Federation of International Football Associations (FIFA), Sihlangu have fallen two places.

They are now ranked 146th in the world, as per the standings released yesterday. The national team has made a trivial downfall from 144 in the latest FIFA rankings, which are still led by world champions Argentina. This comes after a tough June during the international window against Togo in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier, whereby they were defeated 2-0. The Eswatini squad was ranked 144th in the last FIFA rankings released in April. Meanwhile, in Africa, Sihlangu have also dropped two places to 43rd position out of 54 countries.

However, in the world rankings, Eswatini is still ahead of Botswana, Liberia, Hong Kong, China and Indonesia. Meanwhile, Argentina remains number one ahead of France, Brazil, England and Belgium, while Morocco remains Africa’s number one nation. The latter sits in the 13th place in the world ranking.

Efforts to reach Sihlangu Head Coach Dominic Kunene and Sihlangu Captain Lindo Mkhonta were futile. This publication wanted to establish from them if they would be able to improve the rank in next week’s Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (COSAFA) Cup to be played in Durban, South Africa. Sihlangu are in Group A alongside South Africa’s Bafana Bafana, the Zebras of Botswana and Brave Warriors from Namibia. Meanwhile, rankings are essential for a football nation because they help in seeding during draws for major tournaments.  Top-ranked countries usually avoid playing in preliminary rounds of qualifiers.
