Jomo Sono to watch Inkiliva' in final
MBABANE – Umbelebele Jomo Cosmos’ South African based owner Ephraim ‘Jomo’ Sono has promised to grace the club’s SwaziBank Cup final next month.
The celebrated ex-Orlando Pirates soccer great commenting from Johannesburg hailed his team for reaching another major cup final in less than two years.
“I just want to congratulate the guys, especially Veli and his team for their achievement.
That to me shows that the club was a worthy investment and I would definitely be in Swaziland to watch the cup final. Anything can happen in a cup final, hence there are no favourites,” he said.
‘Bra J’ as the Jomo Cosmos owner is affectionately called in football circles missed the 2008 Top Lotto PLS Cup final victory over Mbabane Highlanders. He honoured the team during a party hosted a few weeks after that famous victory at Msunduza Hall.
Local director Veli Dlamini said the success of the team did not come as a surprise to management.
“It’s something we planned from the beginning. Our short term goal was to keep the team in the premier league and the next step was to try and build our reputation on the field of play. That is something we have also achieved in the past two years,” he said.
He also shared Jomo’s sentiments about their chances of winning the tournament.
“Our progress this year were hampered by injuries to key players especially at the back, otherwise we should be challenging for honours even in the league. We did well to bring on young players locally and internationally. We knew when we brought Diabate that he was going to add value in the team and we are not disappointed,” he said.
Umbelebele Cosmos play Mbabane Highlanders in what would be an explosive SwaziBank Cup final billed for April 11.
It will be their second meeting in a cup final after contesting the inaugural Top Lotto PLS Cup in December 2008 where the Msunduza based side won their maiden top flight trophy.
Balindile Mabuza, who is now with Green Mamba scored the winner in what was Francis Banda’s last match as Highlanders coach.
What is ironic about Umbelebele’s success is that if coincides with a rather bad performance by their South African sister team Jomo Cosmos that has since been relegated from the Absa Premier League to the National First Division League.
