OVER E250K FOR G. MAMBA 2ND LEG
MBABANE – Playing in Africa does not come cheap.
This is a fact that the country’s 2023/24 TotalEnergies Confederation of African Football (CAF) Champions League envoys, Green Mamba, can attest to. It gets worse when you do not have a hosting venue and you have to rent a stadium away from home. The Correctional Services side are fresh from forking out a E130 000 bill for the first leg match of the continental inter-club competition, set to play tomorrow at Zimpeto Stadium in Mozambique. The local champions begin the continental journey against Mozambican champions Uniao Desportiva do Songa, also known as UD Songo.
According to an impeccable source close to the Ernest Mavuso-coached Green Mamba, despite the E130 000 already spent on accommodation, they need over E250 000 to host the second leg match at the same venue. This is where they now pay another E130 000 for accommodation and another for the stadium rental. This is due to the fact that the country does not have a stadium suitable to host CAF category ‘A’ matches, after the ban of both the Somhlolo National Stadium and the Mavuso Sports Centre in 2019.
Draining
“We have just parted with E130 000 for this away match and next week we need to have E280 000 for our home match that we are going to host in Mozambique at the Zimpeto Stadium. This is financially draining us,” the source said. The source went on to say that for the stadium fee, they would pay E130 000 and luckily for them this amount incorporated security and hospital expenses within the venue.
“The other amount will cater for accommodation for match officials, as well as for our players and officials as we are the hosting team for the second match,” he said. The source further lamented the fact that the Eswatini Football Association (EFA) failed to meet them halfway in as far as participating in the inter-club competition. He suggested that the country’s football mother body should have at least paid for them. The Correctional Services side left the country for the first match on Thursday, while local fans will leave tomorrow morning.
