MANZINI – Umkhonto KaShaka won 5-4 after sudden death penalties to set a date with Green Mamba in the finals of the 2023 Premier League of Eswatini (PLE) Trade Fair Cup.

The red and white capital city giants overcame a resilient Young Buffaloes in an intense match played at Mavuso Sports Centre yesterday evening. The final of the E1 million sponsored Trade Fair Cup will be played today at the Mavuso Sports Centre and the champions will take home E300 000. Its E150 000 for the runners-up while losing semi-finalists Madlenya and Buffaloes will play in the loser’s finals for a E50 00 incentive. It was Amathole Ezinyathi (Buffaloes) who nearly broke the deadlock a minute into the game, when midfielder Mpendulo ‘Mphetha’ Dlamini’s long drive from outside the box took a deflection and narrowly missed the target with goalkeeper Ciniso Nyawo beaten between the sticks.

Swallows responded nine minutes later as the galloping Sandile ‘Shoeshine’ Hlatjwako rolled a nice low cross to Ncomo Gina, who took a lame shot at goal. Swallows debutant in former Mbabane Highlanders defender Aristote Tamuzi could not believe his eyes when his free header inside the box narrowly missed the target with MTN Premier League reigning goalkeeper of the season Mlungisi Nxumalo at bay. The army side was reduced to 10 men, six minutes before the half-hour mark, when Bongiswa Dlamini was shown a red card after he fouled a goal-bound Sandile Hlatjwako.  The score at half time was 0-0.

The second half was almost a replica of the first stanza as both teams failed to create meaningful attempts at goal. It was only when Caleb introduced speedy winger Siyabonga ‘Siya’ Zwane that Swallows started to push Buffaloes to their limits but they never cracked until Referee Thulani Dlamini blew his final whistle to send the teams straight to penalties. The result was a seventh straight draw between the two Eswatini football giants. In the penalties the two sides missed one each to take the game to the sudden deaths. It was Man of the Match Ciniso Nyawo who proved to be the hero for the ‘Birds’ as he scored and saved Nxumalo’s penalty to take his side to the final with Inyoka eluhlazane later today.
