BIG BEND – Eswatini top cyclists Muzi Shabangu and Nontsikelelo Mdlovu yet again showed their experiences in riding.

The MTN Khemani’s Shabangu took the first winner position in the main event of 2Fast 2Furious clocking 2:39.47 hours. The event was held at Treetops Resort in Big Bend yesterday.
The 25-year-old is fresh from South Africa’s 94.7 podium, where he secured position 25 out of 59 in the Elite category with 2:19.16 hours. On the female category, Kusekhaya Lowveld Invitational winner Nontsikelelo Mdlovu clocked 3:28.44 hours in the 100km category. Shabangu was shortly followed by reigning Kusekhaya Lowveld Invitational and National defending champion Kwanele Jele, who clocked 2:39:58 hours. Meanwhile, in third position was returning veteran cyclist Morgan Rudd with 2:41.21 hours. The cyclists showed dominance from starting point racing in one peloton (a group of cyclists). Sihlangu Sikhondze, on the other hand, was the first to cross the finish line in the elite Men 75km event. The 24-year-old cyclist clocked on 2:06:05 hours.

Junior

National junior champion Malik McNamara took second position with a minute behind Sikhondze having cycled 2:07:03 hours. The 17-year-old was competing in the junior category. In addition, Lihle Fakudze was the third finalist in this event clocking 2:10.31 hours. On the other hand, MTN Khemani’s Nomfundo Jiyane led in the 75km female category with 2:44.11 hours. She was ahead of Shirley Motsa who cycled 2:44.55 hours. While Swane Masango raced 3:00.16 hours to occupy, third place. Shabangu was impressed by his performance, saying it came as a result of planning with the coach.  “The race was hard as this is not my terrain. I am a climber and it was flat. The result is good, considering that I did not practice for a while due to an injury,” he said.

His coach Artwell Ndzinisa was also present at the event, he was happy with the results and said Shabangu did well.  “The race was tough as there is hardly competition in Eswatini. The heat was too much to cope with,” Ndzinisa said. Also, 24-year old Mdlovu led the way from the starting line opening a gap of above 10 minutes from her competitors. She dedicated her win to the Almighty and preparations.  “The trick is to keep on paddling and not quitting regardless of how tough the race is. One should grade their speed in order to know if they should increase it or not,” Mdlovu said.
