DEVELOPING THE NATION TOGETHER

Sunday greetings! On this lovely Sunday, sanibonani.

We thank the Lord for another glorious day, another opportunity to do right with Him. A couple of years ago, the Eswatini Sports and Recreation Council (ESRC) Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Darius Dlomo, made a passionate appeal to our people to consider scheduling their games on Saturday. This was to allow the sporting fraternity the opportunity to worship the Lord on this day. When push comes to shove though; games can still be played in the afternoon after church services. We do need to touch base with our spirituality. We do need to worship and praise the Lord time and again. I digress.

At the time of going to press yesterday, the aerobathon, spinathon and weightlifting festival at the Fitness Zone in Ezulwini was ongoing. Some of the country’s finest instructors, including Andy Mkhatjwa of the S-Team fame, who are our official fitness instructors at the ESRC, were present.  The event started as early as 8am and the numbers were quite impressive. It signalled one thing; our people have embraced healthy living. It is what we advocate for. We have said it many a time that a healthy body equates to a healthy mind. Once the mind is healthy, we can all expect a productive nation. It will be a nation that will not need medical attention as frequently and, thus our government will save substantial amounts in medical costs, which ordinarily would sky rocket.

That is why we will always support mass participation initiatives like this one. Also, activities like this one also act as major tourist attractions. Aerobics clubs from other countries usually honour invitations to come and share ideas with their local counterparts. A typical example was when the S-Team hosted its ‘The One’ at the Mavuso Sports Centre, just last month. The numbers were incredible, with clubs coming from as far as South Africa, Botswana, Lesotho and Mozambique, to mention just a few countries that graced the event.  Of course, sports and recreation have more to give to the country and its people, more than just entertainment.

National Disability Sports Day, Friday

It’s finally here. All seems to be now in place for the National Disability Sports Day. The ESRC will host this great day for our brothers, sisters, mothers and fathers, who are living with disabilities. It is, however, open to all. We do not discriminate. This is another mass participation initiative by the ESRC. Our people living with disabilities are marginalised when it comes to sports. They are never given equal opportunities. We are breaking the barriers and playing with them. After all, disability is not inability. We have invited both corporate and social partners. Obviously, all recognised National Sports Associations will be there as well. We want to make it a day to remember for people living with disabilities. They too deserve the fun and the games. By their nature, as already hinted above, sporting activities become a hive of business activity as well. Our activities give even the vendor an opportunity to earn a living. The corporate sector should grab this opportunity with both hands. Our marketing department is ready to offer lucrative partnership deals for the day and of course, going forward. For now, everyone and every company is invited to come and propagate their respective messages free of charge. It sounds like a once in a lifetime opportunity doesn’t it? It is a day not to be missed.

Congratulations Zakhele Dlamini

Athletics Eswatini President, Zakhele Dlamini has added yet another feather to his cap. He has been appointed to serve in the legal committee of the Regional Anti Doping Organisation (RADO). A sportsman through and through, his passion and commitment has been rewarded with yet another regional recognition. Remember, Dlamini is also the president of athletics in the region. We are really happy for him. We take this time to officially congratulate him on his appointment after the RADO office copied us his appointment letter this week. His appointment will put the country on the map. We wish him all the best as he executes his duties in his new position.
