NARROW ESCAPE FOR CHAMPS MAMBA
NHLANGANO – In an electrifying match, the defending champions of the Ingwenyama Cup, Green Mamba, found themselves relying on a dramatic penalty shootout to secure their spot in the quarter-finals of the tournament.
Led by the determined Coach Ernest Mavuso, Green Mamba had to shake off the disappointment of a midweek 0-1 defeat to Manzini Wanderers. Battling it out with great intensity, they ultimately emerged victorious with a hard-fought 4-3 win in penalties, following a 1-all draw in regulation time.
Tension
The tension heightened in the final moments as Linda Maphalala of Sundowns missed the crucial penalty that could have levelled the score at 4-4 and forced sudden death penalties. On the other side, Khetho Mkhonfto of Green Mamba had an opportunity to seal the game with the fifth penalty, but his shot went astray. The score remained at 4-3 after a prior miss by Gcinizwi Dlamini of Sea Birds. The match itself was a spectacle, filled with excitement and skilful displays of football from both sides.
Deadlock
Green Mamba broke the deadlock near the half-hour mark, thanks to the lethal striker Sabelo ‘Sikhali’ Ndzinisa, who expertly headed the ball into the net from close range. However, Sundowns quickly responded, as Lungelo Mngometulu restored parity just a few minutes later. Mngometulu tapped in a precise cross from Muzi Tsabedze, leaving the game evenly poised.
Following the restart, neither team managed to find the back of the net until the final whistle blew, bringing an end to an exhilarating contest.
