FELIX GOES UNDER THE KNIFE
MBABANE – “I will be back strong.”
This is the story of Mbabane Swallows attacking midfielder Felix ‘Fela’ Badenhorst, who has exclusively discussed his recent injury with this publication. Badenhorst sustained a dislocated shoulder injury during a match against Tambankulu Celtics at Mayaluka Stadium last month, in the Ingwenyama Cup Last 16. Despite this setback, Swallows emerged victorious with a 1-0 win, thanks to Sandile Hlatjwako’s second-half goal.
The former AS Vita forward had to be stretchered off the field just four minutes into the game, following a foul by Jabulani Mpimbili. In response, Coach Caleb Ngwenya brought in Sizolwethu Shabalala as a replacement for the injured Badenhorst. The former TS Galaxy player was rushed to a nearby clinic in Big Bend for treatment before being referred to Ezulwini Private Hospital. After being discharged from there, he was later transferred to Milpark Hospital in South Africa for surgery. Fortunately, Badenhorst was discharged yesterday, marking a positive step in his recovery.
“The successful surgery following my shoulder dislocation injury is a good step in my recovery process, and I’m grateful for the positive outcome. However, it is with a heavy heart that I must accept that this setback came at a crucial time in my career, especially as I was starting to regain my scoring touch. Nonetheless, injuries are an unfortunate reality of the sport I love, and I take solace in knowing that my team is performing well in my absence. I’m now focused on taking each day as it comes and approaching my recovery with positivity and dedication, knowing that this is merely a temporary setback on my journey as a footballer.” he said.
The top goal scorer from last season’s MTN Premier League, with 20 goals, shared that he aimed to return before the current season concludes.
Physiotherapy
“I have already started undergoing physiotherapy, and I believe that I will recover sooner than expected. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to everyone who has been by my side during this journey, particularly Mbabane Swallows and my family. Their support since the injury has been a tremendous source of strength for me,” he added.
Umkhonto KaShaka Governor Sandile ‘Beyond 2000’ Zwane expressed his gratitude to God for the successful operation of one of their key players. Zwane mentioned that the players would continue winning games on behalf of their teammate.
“We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who supported Felix during his preparations for his recent operation, both mentally and physically. The players have pledged to perform to the best of their abilities in his absence, as Felix is a vital member of the squad and one of our senior players. While his absence is undoubtedly a setback, we are heartened by the players’ commitment to playing in his honour and doing their best to make up for his absence. We appreciate everyone’s continued support and encouragement during this challenging time,” he said.
The typical recovery time for a shoulder dislocation is around 12 to 16 weeks, though some activities may be resumed within two weeks and heavy lifting and sports involving shoulder movements should be avoided for up to three months.
This timeframe can vary depending on the severity of the dislocation and the individual’s recovery process. As an example, Jude Bellingham, a professional football player, suffered a dislocated shoulder and was able to return to playing with protection around the area within a month, but may not be fully recovered for another few months
Meanwhile, on Sunday, Umkhonto KaShaka will face National First Division (NFD) team Pigg’s Peak Rangers with a kick-off time of 1:30pm. Following that game, Mbabane Highlanders will face off against Ezulwini United at 4pm.
