LOBAMBA – The Eswatini Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association (EOCGA) has unveiled E560 000 from the International Olympic Solidarity (IOC) for the Eswatini Swimming Association (ESA).

The financial boost was revealed by the EOCGA Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Maxwell Jele, yesterday during a press conference held at their headquarters, in Lobamba. This funding came under IOC Development of National Sports Systems (DNSS) programme aimed at strengthening national sports structures.

“This programme we are launching got financed by the Olympic Solidarity through EOCGA, as they previously funded the Eswatini Tennis Association (ETA). Their application was successful and the Olympic Solidarity   has approved, among others, the funding of US$30 (E56 000),” he said.

Jele further said the ESA’s programme would span for six months, effectively this month and end in July. ESA will next weekend hold the Luphohlo Open Water Challenge. He was optimistic that the funding would strengthen the already existing category and its visibility on international stage.

“We’d like to congratulate the association, and we eagerly waiting for the implementation of the programme. I’d also like to urge all clubs and swimmers to take advantage of this opportunity and excel as their token of appreciation,” he said.

He was also positive that other applications made for Athletics Eswatini (AE) would soon get approved. Meanwhile, ESA President Welcome Nhlabatsi expressed gratitude. Nhlabatsi said the funding would help them stage more open water challenge competitions, as they were used to one in year. He further said it would also help them identify and train their own water challenge specialists as opposed to the use of pool swimmers.
