NHLANGANO – For the first time, Ingwenyama Cup Cultural Competition had a draw meant to avoid the delays and run-arounds that happen during the competition day.

The draw took place at Nhlangano Youth Centre Conference Room yesterday and was attended by representatives of the competing teams, though others did not show up. Chairperson of the Ingwenyama Cup Cultural Competition Chief Bonginkhosi Dlamini explained that in previous competitions, there were delays caused by competitors not wanting to start. During the draw, the representatives would go pick numbers that were in the balls. The numbers determined when they would be performing. Representatives got excited when they did not pick number one and those who had sad faces. They would share that they did not want to start.

It was said that the competition was set to start at 8:30am due to the numbers. “Those who will come late or not show up when they are called to perform will lose marks,” said Dlamini.
It was said that judging would be based on the regalia itself, the dance patterns and the songs in that the lyrics are sung correctly, among other things. Dlamini shared that there would be time limits and they were based on the demo songs that were sent to them. Some of the questions asked were that of make-up if they were allowed as well as hair extensions. Responses were that the event was cultural (siswati) and they would not want to commit but they were expecting to see culture.

It was said that members participating in Lutsango competition were supposed to be between 10 and 40 people. Sibhaca and Ingadla members were supposed to be between six and 12 members and would be competing for E50 000. It was said that those who would be beating the drums were expected to be in full regalia as well. The culture competitions are part of the Ingwenyama Cup, sponsored by the Sincephetelo Motor Vehicle Accidents Fund (SMVAF). The tournament is known for the flawless blending of football and culture. The Shiselweni regional competition will take place on February 24, 2024 at the King Sobhuza II Memorial Stadium. The following day, the competition will be in Manzini.
