THANDAZA, ERIKAH OUT
MBABANE – Two top athletes have narrowly missed out on qualifying for the African Games.
Correctional Services’ sprinter Thandaza Zwane and ace high jumper Erikah Seyama would not be part of the 21-member squad for the African Games Team Eswatini. This squad was announced by the Eswatini Olympics and Commonwealth Games Association (EOCGA) and Eswatini Recreation and Sports Council (ESRC) on Tuesday.
The budget for the games is E1.7 million. In athletics, the country will be represented by Sibusiso ‘Swazi-Bolt’ Matsenjwa and Bongiwe Mahlalela in the 100 and 200-metre sprints.According to the latest revelations by Athletics Eswatini: “In third place was Thandaza Zwane, who missed the qualification quota by a whisker; really as it was merely seconds.”
Qualification
It was also said that high jumper Seyema could not reach the qualification height of 1.75m. “Seyama could only go as far as 1.70. It is a pity that the duo could not meet the qualifying times but we remain proud of their efforts,” AE said.
The athletes who failed to meet the qualifying standards for the African Games were encouraged not to despair but to work extra hard. The African multi-sports showpiece is scheduled to run from March 8 to 23 in Accra, Ghana.
