NHLANGANO – In a quest to fight relegation Rangers eased their burden as they revengefully beat Denver Sundowns 1-0 in an MTN Premier League match played here yesterday.

The visitors failed to complete a double over the Shiselweni-based side, as they had won the first round fixture by a 2-1 scoreline. It was an intense match as the sides searched for an opener which was elusive in the first 45 minutes. There was nothing to write home about in the first stanza as the teams settled for a goalless first half, but it was Sundowns, which created scoring chances more than the host.

The second half was almost the replica of the first 45 minutes as Sundowns created more chances, which they failed to capitalise on. It was Rangers, who eventually broke the deadlock against the run of play two minutes after the hour-mark. This was after the Mthunzi Ginindza-coached side were awarded a penalty. Sundowns import Emmanuel Dufai fouled Ayanda Mabuza inside the box and the referee did not hesitate, but pointed on the spot. Thabo Mngometulu took the responsibility and drove the ball into the far corner.

Sundowns tried to get an equaliser as they pushed Rangers to the limit, but the Shiselweni side held on to their 1-0 lead until the final minutes of the match. Rangers has suppressed down Sundowns as they were only divided by a difference of two points.
