LOBAMBA – National team Sihlangu Skipper Sifiso ‘Ayoba’ Matse is optimistic that the squad can still qualify for the world cup.

The Royal Leopard midfielder said this during the Dominic Kunene-led troops’ media day which was held at the Lobamba Technical Centre yesterday. Sihlangu are currently in camp preparing for the back-to-back against Angola and Mauritius in the World Cup qualifiers. The local squad will face the Black Stable Antelopes of Angola next Friday and the match will start at 6pm. They will then travel to Mauritius for the game against Club M as their squad is fondly known, it will played on June 11, 2024 starting at 3pm.

“The spirit is high among the players and shows that we still have the chance to qualify for the world cup,” Matse said. He, however, lamented the fact that they had not time to rest as they were all fresh from playing for their respective clubs in the league. “This is not an excuse as playing football is our job. I am sure that we will perform well as we are from a competitive season and all the players here are fit,” he said.

Meanwhile, gaffer Kunene said preparations were going well, but they were worried about the league break. He, however, highlighted that looking at the intensity of the preparation he was hopeful for good results in the two games. “We are going to rotate the squad as we are anticipating tough matches,” Kunene said.

The former Young Buffaloes mentor said the issue of the three international players, Justice ‘Figa’ Figuareido, Mxolisi Mkhonto and former skipper Lindo Mkhonta was being handled by the relevant authorities.“We are expecting them to join us soon,” he said. Kunene then revealed that the squad was well blended for the games as well as the upcoming Hollywoodbets COSAFA Cup.
