MBABANE – Former capital city giants Mbabane Swallows Zambia-born Coach Honor Janza says his previous experience can help him take Sihlangu to the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The UEFA B Licence holder in Football Coaching and Analysing, which he obtained in Holland, said he was aware of what Eswatini football lovers wanted. It was earlier reported that the former Swallows coach was among the top coaches who threw their names into the hat for the top spot.  The latter had signed a three-year contract with Swallows in 2018 but the ‘marriage’ was cut short in 2020 under unclear circumstances. He booked Umkhonto KaShaka a slot in the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Confederation Cup during the 2020/21 season. This was after he guided the club to second position.

“I understand that, having been in Eswatini before as a coach is a dream for all football lovers and many other citizens to see one day the country participate in the AFCON tournament, which is rated among the biggest stage of African football for all the countries. Having done it before with Zambia as head coach and won it as an assistant coach, I believe my experience would be enough to attempt reaching out to the AFCON tournament with Eswatini,” he said.

It was earlier revealed that more than 500 coaches, both local and international, submitted applications for the vacant Sihlangu head coach position. Eswatini Football Association (EFA) President Peter ‘Samora’ Simelane affirmed that the May 31 application deadline for the Sihlangu head coach position would not be extended as numerous coaches had already expressed interest in the role. When pressed about specific applicants, the EFA president was unable to provide names, emphasising the high level of interest in the Sihlangu head coach position.
“The tremendous response we’ve received highlights the importance and prestige associated with the role,” he earlier revealed.

Janza boasts a 15-year experience in international and national coaching. He holds a CAF A licence in Football Coaching and Instructing. He guided Zambia to the AFCON stage back in 2015 having won three matches, played two draws and a defeat in the qualifiers. This was not the first time he played in this competition as he won the 2012 AFCON tournament as an assistant coach.
