CONSIDER WOMEN IN EXCO – PLE CHAIR

MBABANE – The Premier League of Eswatini (PLE) Chairperson, Mark Carmichael, personally advocates for gender inclusion within the executive committee.

Carmichael felt it would be ideal for women who are actively involved in the sport to be represented at the highest level of the organisation.  Currently, the outgoing Executive Committee (ExCo) consists solely of seven male members.  “Personally, I feel that it would be a great reward for the women who have been with us in the sport to form part of the executive, as I saw one or two over the past weekend at our (special extraordinary) Assembly. I don’t think it would be a bad thing, as we have seen it happening as a global trend,” said the Denver Sundowns boss. The PLE is preparing for an elective Ordinary General Assembly (OGA) on August 10, 2024.

The chairperson believes that inclusion could be achieved even if no females are nominated to form the new executive.  “You know, women have been associated with good governance, and the Eswatini Football Association has one in their executive. Even if none is nominated, I believe one could make it by being co-opted,” he said. Carmichael mentioned that this would be the greatest reward for women who are actively serving their clubs.

Appointed

However, according to the organisation’s statutes, two additional members are to be appointed by the elected ExCo in their first meeting, for special skills and expertise that are lacking within the executive. The constitution also states that candidates for the election of ExCo members, other than the chairman, must meet certain requirements to be elected.  “Be a director, governor, president, and/or chairperson, who is reflected as such in the membership records of the League, who shall have played an active role in premier league football for two of the last five years, before being proposed as a candidate,” reads Article 31(4)2. It is noteworthy that among the 28 PLE affiliates, there are no women who own a club.
