PORT ELIZABETH – One of the COSAFA Cup’s prominent players will no longer face Sihlangu.

The Mozambique Football Association has confirmed that Captain Edmilson Dove, has been withdrawn from the tournament following a request from his DStv Premiership club Kaizer Chiefs to withdraw the defender from their Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (COSAFA) Cup squad. The player was due to lead his side against  South Africa’s Bafana Bafana, last night, here in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, before meeting Sihlangu on Saturday.

“It’s the latest twist on the ongoing changes at Naturena with the imminent arrival of Coach Nasreddine Nabi, who has sent over his backroom staff to begin assessing the team and making recommendations ahead of the 2025/24 season,” reported the SABC. Dove, who is out of contract at the end of the month, had agreed to represent Mozambique in the regional competition out of a sense of pride.  “But it appears as though the Soweto giants intend on retaining the services of the defender, considering the latest developments,” reads the report. Meanwhile, Sihlangu played a goalless draw against Botswana in the opening game of the competition.
