SIHLANGU FINALLY COMPLY

PORT ELIZABETH – The Eswatini Football Association (EFA) has finally implemented a directive from the Ministry of Sports, Culture and Youth Affairs.

It was exclusively reported in our sister publication on May 5, this year, that EFA was still not using the national sports emblem  that was launched by government in partnership with the Eswatini Sport and Recreation Council (ESRC), back in 2018. The emblem appeared on all national squads’ kits except for teams from the EFA.  The ‘defiance’ has since ended. The emblem appeared in the Umbro kit used by the team in the opening game of the Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (COSAFA) Cup against Botswana, in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, yesterday.

The emblem looks like a purple-crested turaco (ligwalagwala), which is considered Eswatini’s national bird. An emblem stands for a group or concept. Many emblems often feature an animal that represents significant parts of the country’s history. Experts say, while a logo has a commercial connotation, an emblem has more traditional and historical meaning.
Failure to follow the directive was raising eyebrows for obvious reasons. The government pumps in up to E5 million into Sihlangu per year.
