MBABANE – In a surprising move, Mbabane Highlanders’ defensive midfielder Mpendulo Tfomo has left the club to join Manzin Sea Birds.

Tfomo, who previously played for Moneni Pirates before signing for ‘Inkundzi Emnyama’ during the 2022/23 MTN Premier League season, has shown versatility in his ability to play in several positions, including as a midfielder and central defender. He becomes the second player from Ally Kgomongwe’s Highlanders squad to depart for greener pastures, following the exclusive report by this publication of Emmanuel Owusu’s move from Highlanders to rival team Mbabane Swallows on a one-year contract. Sources at the Mbabane giants have once again exclusively shared with this publication that the cool, calm and collected midfielder, who was a regular in the team, has left the squad. According to our source, Tfomo’s contract with the club is expiring this week, resulting in his departure from the team.

“It is indeed true that Mpendulo Tfomo has left Mbabane Highlanders, and he will officially become a Manzini Sea Birds player on July 1. As a club, we understand that when players receive better opportunities to advance their careers with other teams, there is little we can do to prevent their departure. This is part of the nature of professional football, and while it can be disappointing to lose valuable players, we must accept these developments as part of the game,” lamented the source. After reaching out to Mpendulo Tfomo for a comment on his move to Manzini Sea Birds, the player remained tight-lipped on the matter. However, he did share with this publication that he was indeed leaving Mbabane Highlanders, confirming his departure from the team.

“Eish...this is really unexpected, and I must address it with care and respect because of my deep affection for Mbabane Highlanders. Please understand my concern, and I would ask that you reach out to the team to clarify the situation,” he said. Meanwhile, when inquired about the potential addition of Tfomo to the Sea Birds squad, the club’s Public Relations Officer (PRO) remained coy on the subject, stating that while the team is yet to register any new players, they are planning to sign new talent during the off-season, as is customary for many teams. “Our players are currently enjoying their off-season break, and they will return to the team next month to prepare for the upcoming season. We appreciate your interest and patience, and we will be sure to update you as soon as we have new information to share,” he said.

Mbabane Sea Birds’ recent signing of Mpendulo Tfomo follows their acquisition of Mayibongwe ‘Suarez’ Mabuza from Nsingizini Hotspurs. This is their second major signing ahead of their preseason. According to reports, Sea Birds are also in negotiations with Nsingizini Hotspurs’ forward Sambulo ‘Masoso’ Simelane and are said to be interested in Mbabane Highlanders’ talented midfielder Banele ‘Pupu’ Sikhondze.
