JUDO STAR LAMULELA SECURES TOGO SCHOLARSHIP

MBABANE – Eswatini’s accomplished Judoka, Lamulela Magagula, has been awarded a one-month high-performance scholarship programme in Togo.  This is in recognition of her exceptional performance in Ivory Coast.

This was revealed by the Eswatini Judo Federation (EJF) President Princess Thobile Magagula, who announced this during yesterday’s function at the Mountain View Hotel, where Magagula’s exceptional performance in in Ivory Coast had earned her a one-month high-performance scholarship programme in Togo. This scholarship was awarded to the Judo artist in recognition of her gold medal-winning performance, which was also celebrated with a cash award of E10 000 from the Minister of Sports, Culture and Youth Affairs Bongani Nzima.
Magagula recently participated in the Abidjan African Open Championships in Ivory Coast and delivered a brilliant performance on the mat. Competing in the 63kg category, she emerged victorious by defeating Ivory Coast’s Sarah Dabonne and Gabon’s Asseghe Bidouele to claim gold at the competition.


“As the Eswatini Judo Federation president, I am delighted to announce that Lamulela Magagula has been offered a one-month high-performance training programme in Togo. This training programme will commence when Lamulela’s academic schedule allows. Depending on her academic commitments, the training will take place either this year or next year. It is a prestigious opportunity that we at the EJF, see as a significant milestone for Lamulela and the Eswatini Judo community,” she said. Moreover, the Minister extended his congratulations to Lamulela Magagula for her excellent performance.

“You have done, not just yourself proud, but your family, your community and indeed, the entire country. His Majesty’s Government is immensely proud of you. This result is also testament of the support you have received from your family. It is no small matter for a family to allow a young woman like you to travel all the way to Ivory Coast. We deeply appreciate this and, once again, it underlines the importance of support from family for our sportspeople. We continue to encourage parents, guardians and families to be actively involved in the sports lives of their children. Such support is critical to the development of our sports stars,” he said.

The minister went on to praise the efforts of the EJF for their dedication to the growth and development of Judo in Eswatini. “I now challenge you, president and your executive, to continue to take the sport to the people and produce even more gold-winning athletes for us,” Nzima said.At the same event, two stalwarts of Eswatini’s sporting history received the highest recognition from the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region V, for their contributions to sports in the region over the past 25 years. Retired administrator Maswazi Shongwe and football legend Absalom ‘Scara’ Thindwa were awarded certificates of appreciation during the occasion, which marked the AUSC Region V’s 25th anniversary (Silver Jubilee).
