MBABANE – It is a fierce battle for the Premier League of Eswatini (PLE) chairmanship if lobbying among clubs is anything to go by.

About 40 days before the August 10 elective general assembly, several names have been thrown around following reported serious lobbying among clubs. As per classified information leaked to this publication, the incumbent Chairman Mark Carmichael might face off with some of the executive committee (ExCo) members who include, in no particular order, Polycarp Dlamini, Sibusiso ‘Scorpion’ Nxumalo and Charles Matsebula.  Former executive committee member Sicelo Mkhonta has also been ‘shortlisted’ by the clubs, ahead of the official nomination exercise that will start in less than three weeks’ time. “It could snowball into a three or even two-horse race at the end, but it’s a wait-and-see,” said one of the clubs on condition of anonymity for fear of victimisation.

The ‘shortlisted’ candidates were sought for comment on the reports. Mkhonta politely asked to comment after the nomination exercise. “I was not aware of it. We’re busy wrapping up as an outgoing ExCo. It’s humbling to learn that some clubs have confidence in my leadership. I can’t say much for now. My wish is that the elections be driven by PLE vision and strategic objectives not anything else because we all clearly know what are the organisational urgent needs,” said Nxumalo, when sought for comment on the reported vote of confidence from clubs.

Questionnaires were sent   to all the said candidates but had not responded by 4pm, yesterday. All the above-mentioned candidates qualify for the position. As per Article 38.1 of the PLE Constitution, the candidate for chairmanship must be a liSwati citizen or a permanent resident of Eswatini who resides within the territory of the PLE. He or she must have been an executive committee member of the PLE for not less than two years prior to nomination. “For the election of the Chairperson, a simple majority of the votes recorded and valid are necessary,” reads Article 38 in part. Nomination is to be done at least 30 days before the election.

Possible candidates so far:

Mark Carmichael
Polycarp Dlamini
