MBABANE – Moneni Pirates are mourning the death of their head, in Msesi Catherine Matsenjwa.

The deceased is team founder Ngungunyane Matsenjwa’s wife and she played a patronage role in the team, that is based in the bustling community of Moneni.  Fondly known as Gogo Matsenjwa, she was supposed to turn 78 in August, this year. Catherine succumbed to an undisclosed sickness.  She was actively involved in the running of the team and management would now and again consult with her for guidance. Team Public Relations Officer (PRO) Sibusiso Nkambule confirmed learning about the disturbing news, saying the late Catherine, nee Sibanyoni, was a unifying factor in the team.

Patronage

“She played her patronage role with distinction and she was always open to assist. She demonstrated great leadership. To us, she was like a place where we sought refuge.
“She was kind to everyone around her and she left a legacy. Our deepest condolences go to everyone she touched, especially the Matsenjwa, Sibanyoni and Moneni families,” he said.
Meanwhile, Pirates were established by Ngungunyane, with an aim of bringing together the youths of Moneni township in the outskirts of Manzini.  Prior to the club being taken over by Matsenjwa (Ngungunyane), it was known as the Blue Birds Football Club. In 1967, the club’s name changed to Moneni Pirates FC, inspired by Soweto giants, Orlando Pirates.
There will be a memorial service, this coming Friday, at Divine Healing Ministries, opposite St Michael’s School in Manzini. She will be laid to rest at Moneni after a short service, starting at 4am, at the Matsenjwa homestead.
