CHESS TEAM FOR HUNGARY OLYMPIADS REVEALED
MBABANE – Eswatini Chess federation (ECF) has announced the squad to represent the country in the 45th Chess Olympiad to be held in Hungary.
As per the memorandum released by ECF, the players qualified through the 2024 National Chess Championships, which were held in Manzini this year. The Open selection will be headed by Master Sikhanyiso Dlamini, who won the championship in May, while the Women’s selection will be led by Sincobile Dlamini who was the champion at the National Championship as well.
The Trojan Horse Chess club, Deputy Director, Sikhanyiso Sihlongonyane, expressed that he was very grateful for the opportunity to lead the national team on the global stage. “As a national champion, I am honoured to lead the team. I believe this is a very strong team, equipped with differently skilled players who will represent the country very well. “We are looking forward to our preparations through training, which will get us ready for the Olympiad, I believe it is an honour for every player to represent the nation on an important global stage such as the World Chess Olympiad,’’ Sihlongonyane said. The team consists of junior players, who will be making their debut in the first team, Nolwazi Buthelezi and Philani Mtsetfwa.

The event is scheduled for September 10 -23, 2024, and this year’s edition will feature open and women’s tournament, as well as several events designed to promote the game of chess.
Meanwhile, ECF president, Dumisani Msibi could not be reached for comment as his phone rang unanswered by the time of compiling this report.
