MBABANE – Despite ongoing renovations at the Mavuso Sports Centre, the venue will be ready to host soccer events.

The renovations, which began in March rendered the stadium unavailable for MTN Premier League matches. Leading contractors Du-Van Developers are doing the alterations of the Mavuso Trade Exhibition and Sports Centre’s VVIP Box. The Trade Fair Cup, as in previous editions, is usually one of the main attractions of the 10-day Eswatini International Trade Fair, which is organised by the Eswatini Investment Promotion Authority (EIPA).This year’s edition will run from August 30 to September 8. The soccer spectacle, reborn last year, is expected to be one of the featured items. The tournament, which usually features the 14 Premier League teams is yet to be confirmed.

EIPA’s spokesperson Sibusiso Mnisi, has established that work is progressing in the VVIP area. “The contractor is expected to hand over the project later this year. Trade Fair proceedings will not be interrupted,” he said when asked about the availability of the venue. Mnisi further stated that bookings during construction would be managed in accordance with the works and risks associated with the project at each given time a booking is requested. There will be no construction during the Trade Fair. “As construction continues, there will be periods of complete shutdown where the risk is perceived as high and this is to avoid accidents. Those periods will be communicated to stakeholders,” he added.

Last year, the Premier League of Eswatini (PLE) sponsored the competition, which was won by Green Mamba. Besides football games, there are also other non-soccer events held at the Mavuso Sports Centre Hall. In the previous edition, netball, basketball and boxing games, among others, took centre stage.  “EIPA is still in the process of finalising the proposals sent by the associations of different sporting codes for tournaments to be held at the Trade Fair. At this stage, there is no feedback to share; however, we will be able to give details as soon as the various agreements between associations and other stakeholders are signed,” Mnisi disclosed.
