NSINGIZINI OPPONENTS’ COACH EAGER FOR CAF DEBUT
MBABANE – Stellenbosch FC Head Coach Steve Barker has revealed that he is eagerly anticipating his team’s participation in the CAF competition next month.
‘Stellies’, along with Eswatini’s Nsingizini Hotspurs, will make their first appearance in the Confederation of African Football (CAF) inter-club competitions, with their two-legged tie scheduled for August 16-22 and 22-25, respectively. The victor of this initial match-up will go on to face the formidable AS Vita from the Democratic Republic of Congo. The successful conclusion of the DStv Premiership campaign saw Stellenbosch FC securing a third-place finish to earn a spot in the upcoming Confederation Cup. This maiden voyage into the continental arena promises to be an exciting and challenging journey for Barker and his team, who are determined to make the most of their debut season.
With his recent acquisition of a CAF A Licence, Barker said he was now eligible to lead his team from the sidelines during their African sojourn, a prospect that he was already eagerly anticipating. “I recently had the pleasure of consulting with Eric Tinkler and Gavin Hunt, two accomplished coaches who have previously competed in CAF. Their insights are invaluable as we prepare to embark on our own journey in this prestigious tournament. I got a lot of insights into what to expect, and the one thing that came out for me was that you’ve actually got to go and enjoy it, although there will be obstacles and a lot of challenges and frustrations,” he said.
The South Africa-born gaffer stated that he is aware of the challenging nature of the CAF Confederation Cup. Despite this, he shared that he has outlined a clear, strategic approach for the team, with the primary goal being to secure a spot in the group stage of the tournament. “Once we have accomplished this, we can then begin to think about our chances in the knockout rounds,” the coach said.
