AS WANDERERS CASE DRAGS ON: LEAGUE KICK-OFF DELAY LOOMS
MBABANE – The start of the 2024/25 MTN League might be thrown into disarray, if the Manzini Wanderers appeal case is not resolved in the next 21 days.
In reality, the MTN League kick-off faces multiple threats. These include the pending hub giants’ demotion case and the Lubombo Regional Football Association (LRFA) promotion dispute. The maroon and white outfit are the second candidates for relegation after Denver Sundowns. Both teams finished the last season in the drop zones. However, Wanderers lodged a protest in the final and decisive game against Sundowns, which they eventually lost. They objected Sundowns’ skipper Jimoh Moses, and said was ineligible to play. They claimed that he did not have a valid work permit.
Since losing, they have not thrown in a towel. They then lodged an appeal with the Eswatini Football Association (EFA) Appeal Board. The Nyanga ‘Crooks’ Hlophe’s side’s is pending before the EFA. Appeals Board. As they anxiously wait for the date, the clock ticks closer to the season kick-off. It is exactly 27 days until the league opener matches. The Premier League of Eswatini (PLE) announced two days ago that the new season will begin on the weekend of August 17-18 for the top-tier. However, before the kick-off, there is the Elective General Assembly that will take place in 21 days’ time.
By August 10, the matter of Wanderers must be resolved. If not, PLE will not be able to announce the two clubs that will be relegated from the Premier League. It will be the same case for announcing the fourth team that will be joining the National First Division (NFD). The Liverpool and Magwanyana matter was pending at the High Court yesterday at time of finalising this report. The outcome of the case may decide which team between them gets promoted. The lower division kick-off is set for the weekend of August 24-25. PLE Acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Pat Vilakati, speaking on national radio yesterday, said it will be after the OGA that they will also be able to release the master fixtures. Vilakati was speaking on the Eswatini Broadcasting and Information Service (EBIS) Sports Show programme, confirming the league kick-off dates.
Meanwhile, EFA Marketing and Communications Officer Muzi ‘Rhoo’ Radebe, when reached for comment, said he could not comment on Wanderers’ appeal matter. This was so because the matter is sub judice, which means it is under trial or being considered by a judge or court. Worth noting is it will not be the first time the league kick-off is affected by relegation battles dragging through the courts. In the 2022/23 season, the NFD season began late as Rangers and Milling Hot Spurs challenged their relegation before eventually accepting their fate.
