CAF UNVEILS LICENSED CLUBS AHEAD OF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE
MBABANE – The Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF) has made significant strides in promoting women’s football on the African continent by unveiling a list of clubs that have been granted licences to compete in the 2024 CAF Women’s Champions League.
The publication reported yesterday that Eswatini Women’s Football League (EWFL) champions Young Buffaloes Ladies learnt their opponents for the 2024 COSAFA Women’s Champions League zonal qualifiers. The army were drawn alongside three debutants in Gaborone United Ladies SC from Botswana, Uniao Desportiva de Lichanga from Mozambique and Ascent Academy from Malawi. The draw was conducted on Wednesday morning in Johannesburg, by the Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (COSAFA) Competitions Manager, Joshua Knipp and Banyana Banyana Captain Refiloe Jani.
The Confederation of African Football has announced that 38 women’s football clubs have successfully met all the requirements of the CAF Club Licensing System and have been officially confirmed as licensed. The Head of Professional Football at CAF Muhammad Sidat, expressed his enthusiasm for this milestone in women’s football. “This is yet another significant achievement for women’s football in Africa. The completion of the Club Licensing Procedure 2024/25 through the CLOP for women’s teams ensures that women’s football is growing not just on the pitch, but also in terms of administration and management,” he said .
Meanwhile, before a license can be granted, CAF thoroughly evaluates each club on the following elements: Sporting, Infrastructure, Personnel and Administrative, Legal, and Financial. This stringent process is part of CAF’s overarching objective of enhancing the administrative standards of club football across Africa.
Applications
For the 2024/25 club licensing cycle, CAF has made the use of the CAF Club Licensing Online Platform (CLOP) mandatory for all Member Associations to process applications for clubs seeking to participate in the CAF Women’s Champions League. The Fisiwe ‘Shisa’ Hlophe’s charges will be making their third appearance at the region’s inter-clubs competition since its establishment four years ago. In the first edition, which was won by Hollywoodbets outfit Mamelodi Sundowns, the country’s envoys were Manzini Wanderers. Buffaloes Ladies are yet to progress to the next stage of the competition. They were booted out in the group stages in all their three appearances.
