SWIMMERS’ OLYMPICS DREAM SHATTERED
MBABANE – Local swimming sensations Hayley Hoy and Chadd Ning did not have the desired debut following unfavourable results yesterday.
This was during the ongoing Summer Olympic Games staged in Paris, France which started from Friday until August 11. Despite being the second youngest swimmer in her heat, Hoy (16) showed a remarkable performance finishing her stroke on the world’s biggest stage. Hoy competed in heat 1 of the Women’s 100m (metres) butterfly event, but could not make it to the next round. Hoy swam 31.31 seconds in the first half placing her in the last position of the competitors. She could not make a comeback in the last half as she swam an overall of 1:08 minutes. She swam against over 30 swimmers in the women’s butterfly 100m event exactly at 11am with the venue as La Defense arena.
Meanwhile, co-swimmer Chadd Ning (18) secured fourth position in his heat. The latter swam 31.75 seconds for the first 50m and clocked 1:09 minutes overall. He was competing in the Men’s 100m breaststroke event. With this result, he did not progress to the next round. The duo played a pivotal role as part of the 71 swimmers who were flag bearers during the official opening ceremony two days back. Instead of the traditional parade on foot, athletes this year rode down the Seine on boats across a four-mile route.
All eyes will be on Eswatini’s fastest man Sibusiso ‘Swazi Bolt’ Matsenjwa who is the only remaining local athlete in the competition. The seasoned runner will compete later next week in the Men’s 100m event. The short distance runner, will be competing for the last time before hanging up his spikes.
