PHOENIX VB TOURNEY 24 TEAMS TO TAKE PART
MBABANE – Eswatini National Volleyball Association (ENVA) A Division side Phoenix Ladies are set to host 24 teams across two venues, this weekend.
The tournament dubbed Phoenix’s Volleyball Galore will take centre stage on Saturday at OlympAfrica Sports Development Centre in Lobamba before culminating on Sunday at the BOSCO Sports Hall in Manzini. Zandile Dlamini, who is a member of the ladies club hosting the tournament, mentioned that there were seven ladies teams that confirmed their participation. At least 17 male teams confirmed their participation.
However, Dlamini revealed that some of the male teams asked for a grace period to complete their registration. The joining fee is E600. The deadline for registration was set for last week, July 25. Dlamini, who had previously mentioned that there was a club from Lesotho that had shown interest, cited that they would no longer be participating in the tournament based on certain protocols that needed to be followed through the ENVA, as well as the visiting club’s association channels.
“We have decided to make it an international tournament, next year,” revealed Dlamini. She further mentioned that based on the interest shown by the 24 teams, it meant that the tournament was well- marketed or teams in general had been anticipating another volleyball tournament. She further stated that the numbers were overwhelming and it was certainly the first-of-its-kind for such to happen.
“We will have new teams that we have never seen in volleyball, such as Dwaleni Sneak Spikers. We will also be joined by a team from the Swaziland National Association of Teachers (SNAT) because their team is going to host the Council of Southern Africa Teachers Organisation (COSATO) games very soon,” she said. She further disclosed that the team coming from SNAT would be joining the male’s category, while highlighting on the number of new teams. Dlamini expressed hope that they would ultimately join the leagues sanctioned by the ENVA.
She also said that it would be up to the local association to motivate and attract such teams into participating in the league, fostering an improved competition and duration for the league, where hopefully a five set league structure could be put in place.
