SOMHLOLO E35M REHAB BEGINS
MBABANE – The final rehabilitation of Somhlolo National Stadium is now underway.
The stadium is undergoing rehabilitations to meet the Confederation of African Football (CAF) standard, following a 2022 ban on hosting matches. Once it meets the specified standards, the country will be able to host continental category ‘A’ games, which include those of the senior national team Sihlangu, as well as inter-club competitions. The Ministry of Sports, Culture and Youth Affairs Communication Officer, Sibongiseni Zondi, said last week that the phase would kick-off this week. “We anticipate that the programme for Phase VI will begin next (this) week.
As the work has not yet begun, it would be difficult to draw up concrete timelines regarding the completion of works under this phase of the rehabilitation,” Zondi said. The communications officer further stated that the ministry was committed to ensuring that the work was done efficiently, considering the stadium’s demand from many sectors of society. This was in response to whether the country’s soccer ‘Mecca’, will be available for bookings in the upcoming season.
Budget
It is worth mentioning that the Minister of Finance, Neal Rijkenberg tabled a E35 million budget for the national arena’s Phase V rehabilitation. This was during this year’s budget speech in February. According to the budget estimates document for this government’s fiscal year, the new-look Somhlolo will feature, among other things, a E10 million VVIP hospitality area and E9 million for sewer and toilets. The breakdown includes up to E3 million for a media room, E2 million for a VIP gate, E3 million for a giant screen and E2 million for a backup generator. Government has also budgeted E1 million for a retractable tunnel. Up to E5 million is allocated for professional fees and contingencies.
In the past season, the stadium hosted some Ingwenyama Cup games, sponsored by the Sincephetelo Motor Vehicle Accidents Fund (SMVAF). Towards the end of the season, it also held some league games. Early last month, it was home to the One Nation’s Cup preseason tournament. Meanwhile, it is expected to host the Council of Southern Africa Teachers Organisation (COSATO) Games, scheduled for August 15 to 17.
