‘STIGA’, MKHONTO IN E38M LEAGUE
MBABANE – It is bigger and better!
Two of Eswatini’s football stars are poised to compete in the highly-lucrative FNB Premiership league, which is sponsored with over E38 million for a duration of three years. Box-to-box midfielder Mxolisi Mkhonto plays for Botswana champions Jwaneng Galaxy. Another Eswatini player in Botswana’s top division is Banele ‘Stiga’ Ndzabandzaba of BDF XI.
The revised purse follows the Botswana Premier League’s (BPL) substantial sponsorship of 28.5 million Pula, which is equivalent to E38 849 786.17 in Friday’s exchange rate. First National Bank (FNB) Botswana has committed to sponsoring the league over the next three years, with each season receiving over E12 million. At a recent launch event held at the FNB Head Office, FNB Botswana and the Botswana Football League (BFL) unveiled the new logo and officially designated the top-tier league as the FNB Premiership.
Money
It is worth noting that last season, the BFL confirmed that Mkhonto’s side, Jwaneng Galaxy and the other 15 league sides would not receive any prize money for their efforts, as announced by BFL Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Bennett Mamelodi after the recently concluded season finale. Additionally, the FNB Botswana sponsorship will commence at the beginning of the 2024/25 football season and conclude after the 2026/27 campaign.
