‘RIO’ PENS 2-YEAR DEAL WITH PIRATES
MBABANE – After all has been said and done, former capital city giants Highlanders midfield maestro, Lindani ‘Rio’ Matsenjwa, has joined Moneni Pirates.
Reports suggest that the latter has signed a two-year deal. He was purportedly spotted training with Mbabane Swallows earlier. Matsenjwa once had a stint with the ‘Sea Robbers’, as Pirates are affectionately known. He played for the country’s national junior squads and the senior team, Sihlangu. Public Relations Officer (PRO) Sibusiso Nkambule, neither confirmed nor denied these reports. “The team is still busy with its signings. Players will be unveiled in due course,” he said. The Young Buffaloes development box-to-box midfielder joined Highlanders during the 2018/19 season. However, his time with the team was marred by a turbulent relationship, culminating in an extended absence from the squad.

This tumultuous period persisted until the conclusion of the 2023/24 MTN Premier League season, at which point the player’s contract expired, rendering him a free agent. The midfielder even took the club to the Eswatini Football Association (EFA) Player’s Status Committee, alleging that the team had failed to pay his salary for three months, in previous seasons. The 25-year-old’s unstable journey continued into the 2022/23 season, when he failed to register in time with the now Mthunzi Ginindza-led side, causing him to miss the team’s opening games.
The first window registration period is currently open and set to close on September 20, 2024. It is worth noting that players who may qualify to be registered outside this window, will have until October 18 to do so.Meanwhile, the second window registration period shall commence on January 8, 2025 and close on February 3, 2025. Like in the case of the first window registration period, no registration of players will be allowed after February 28, 2025.
