PIRATES CHANGES: ‘MAGAWUGAWU’ IN, PRO OUT
MATSAPHA – Moneni Pirates CEO Mandla Mahlalela has announced some changes to their management committee (MC) and technical bench ahead of the 2024/25 season.
He said this during the official unveiling of their three signings in Lindani ‘Rio’ Matsenjwa, Bernard Ayikwei and Mthokozisi ‘General’ Dlamini. They further unveiled former Mbabane Swallows Ghana-born Head Coach Christopher Ennin. The event was held at Esibayeni Lodge yesterday. As per the changes, long-serving defender Menzi ‘Magawugawu’ Simelane will now serve as a player/ coach.

The seasoned defender has been tasked to fill in departed physical trainer Percy Shongwe’s shoes. However, he will still continue playing. He boasts a certificate in Physical Training.
“He is our player and our plan is to elevate him to the technical team. We are hoping coaches will assist him as he transitions from being a player to trainer,” Mahlalela said. In addition, Public Relations Officer (PRO) Sibusiso Nkambule has been replaced by Tipho Tshabalala. Tshabalala, who is not new to the team, will serve in the Marketing and Communications department.
Ennin expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to return and use his services locally. Reports suggested that he had penned a renewable one-year deal with the side. The gaffer has a wealth of experience as he is in possession of the CAF A Licence and other coaching qualifications, including FAT A coaching certificate (Thailand). He also has a Bachelor of Commerce Degree from Cape Coast University. “It is a privilege to join one of the biggest and oldest clubs locally. It had been my dream to join the club, as they use my philosophy. The team will compete in the league,” he said. The head coach, who had an alleged sour relationship with Swallows fans, explained his reason for returning to Eswatini.
“Working with a club where your expectations are not met should not discourage you. When it comes to the battleground, I’m good to go,” he said. Gcina Dlamini, who is now an assistant coach, said they were eyeing a top four finish at the end of the season.“My combination with Ennin will produce fireworks. I do not have any issues with the downgrade because it is him. If it was someone else, maybe I would have had a problem,” Dlamini said.
The players expressed their eagerness to start the new season with the ‘Sea Robbers’, as Pirates are affectionately known. Notably, new signee Dlamini was a Hlatshwako before a name change.“The surname Hlatshwako is my mother’s. My father has done what is required for me to assume the Dlamini surname. I am grateful to Pirates for seeing me as one of the players they can use. We are looking forward to winning at least one of the many trophies with the club this coming season,” he said.
