TN CMO EXPLAINS MOMO CUP ‘FREEZE’
EZULWINI – Eswatini football’s major sponsor MTN Eswatini, remains cheerful to partner with the Premier League of Eswatini (PLE).
MTN has been Eswatini’s football sponsor for over 20 years. Back in September 2022, ‘marriage vows’ were renewed with a whopping E19.5 million purse, which was spread over three seasons. The last instalment of the sponsorship is for the 2024/25 campaign, which is expected to kick-off next weekend. During a media engagement session at Mahlalekhukhwini House in Ezulwini yesterday, Ruhinguka Desire, who is the Chief Marketing Officer at MTN Eswatini, said the company remained happy with the PLE partnership, saying the ultimate goal was to add more value to clubs and make them sustainable.
“We’re excited that talks with PLE are ongoing over the launch of the new season,” he said. For two seasons, MTN, through its fintech wing, has also sponsored the MoMo Cup for two straight seasons. A decision to put on hold the tournament was taken late last year. Afi Dlamini, who is Fintech Consumer Segments Manager, clarified the cause of the ‘freeze’. She allayed fears that they ‘ran away.’
“Inasmuch as fintech is separate, there is still the same ‘father’ at the top, who is MTN. We felt it proper to have a review to maximise on the existing MTN sponsorship. This was done to ensure that MTN and fintech were able to co-exist and leverage on the sponsorship,” she said. Meanwhile, all two editions of the MoMo Cup were won by ambitious Shiselweni-based side Nsingizini Hotspurs.
