LESS THAN E20K FROM MOMO VOTES
MBABANE – The now defunct MTN FinTech MoMo Cup, is said to have raked in less than E20 000 from paid votes.
This was despite that over E150 million worth of votes were accumulated. This is contained in the Premier League of Eswatini (PLE) Activity report for the 2023/24 season, which was presented in this past Saturday’s elective general assembly at Sigwaca House in Mbabane. It was highlighted under the challenges faced by the second edition of the tournament. Nsingizini Hotspurs were the highest voters and winners of both editions.
All 28 clubs from the Premier League and National First Division (NFD) participated in a voting exercise on the MoMo system to qualify for the tournament’s semi-finals and play-offs.
The voting process had two components. MTN FinTech introduced free votes for MoMo users transacting on the MoMo platform, to enable all clubs to mobilise their fan base. Additionally, there was a paid voting option where each vote cost E2. The activity report states that only 25 531 unique subscribers voted on the system. The report further suggested that the voting system needed to be revisited for the next edition, which was expected to be played this year, to ensure transparency. It also stated that the sponsor did not feel the respect and cooperation they expected from clubs.
Another challenge highlighted was that some clubs collected votes at an incredible rate, raising concerns about fraudulent activity. However, MTN FinTech discovered that clubs were utilising votes from MoMo agents and merchants, which were not eligible. The tournament’s sponsorship was pulled out late last year. There are reportedly ongoing talks between PLE and the sponsor on possibilities of bringing it back. PLE Acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Pat Vilakati confirmed the ongoing negotiations.
“MoMo Cup mentioned that they are open to negotiations, despite their withdrawal. There are ongoing talks,’’ he said on Saturday during a media briefing after the ordinary general assembly (OGA). Worth noting is that the PLE is yet to release the calendar of activities for the upcoming season. The calendar item was deferred alongside the financial report.
