INJURY RULES MKHONTA OUT OF CONFED OPENER
MBABANE – ZESCO United have suffered a huge blow ahead of their CAF Confed quest.
Reports suggest that Eswatini international Lindo ‘All-Trades’ Mkhonta sustained a hamstring during training. This led to him missing out on the first leg of the TotalEnergies Confederation of African Football (CAF) Confederation Cup competition against Zimbabwean side Dynamos in Botswana tomorrow. Mkhonta confirmed team medics have deemed him not fit for this much-anticipated match. “I will possibly return for the second leg. However, training was going well and I believe my teammates will produce good results,” he said.
The right-footed player will be competing in these games for the sixth time. If Mkhonta’s team defeat Dynamos, they will then proceed to the second preliminary round in September. This is where they will meet either Foresters from Seychelles or Orapa United from Botswana.On the other hand, Mxolisi Mkhonto is now eligible to play for his team in this tournament. The box-to-box midfielder was cup tied last season as he had already participated with his former team Green Mamba. As per the competition rules, a player cannot compete in this stage for two different clubs. Jwaneng Galaxy, where he has a running contract clash with Namibia’s Premier League champions, African Stars today. They will be making their third appearance in this stage.
If the Lesagaripa, as they are fondly known, manage to overcome this hurdle, chances are formidable Soweto giants Orlando Pirates will be waiting for their revenge. A 1-0 stunner was enough to force Pirates out of this competition in the first leg last season. The first preliminary round first leg commenced yesterday and is set to end tomorrow. The return leg is set to be played about seven days later.
