ROOKIES STUN BUFFS LADIES IN OPENER
MBABANE – Eswatini powerhouse, Young Buffaloes had no dream start in the CAF COSAFA Women’s Champions League yesterday.
Two goals in the opening period were enough to derail the Eswatini side’s journey in this competition. A packed Mpira Stadium in Blantyre, Malawi witnessed as debutants in this tournament cruised past three-time participants, Young Buffaloes. The game marked Buffaloes’ Confederation of African Football (CAF)/ Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (COSAFA) Qualifiers’ journey.
It was Faith Chinzimu, a defender, who produced a good run to slot it home a minute from the kick off. The Eswatini side gained momentum with an equaliser in the 11th minute after Captain Tenanile Ngcamphalala fired beautifully past Patricia Kachepa. Nevertheless, forward Alephar Chimbeta stretched the lead with a low kick just in the 45th minute. The home side Ascent were leading 2-1, when South African referee Nompendulo Ndlela signalled for a breather. Just into replay Buffaloes coach Fisiwe Hlophe attempted to regroup with three substitutions. Nothando Dlamini, Temalangeni Dlamini and Nomvuyo Dvuba replaced Sisanda Ndzinisa, Noxolo Malinga and Welile Ndwandwe.
Reckless
It never rained but poured for Buffaloes, as their trusted forward Simangele Sikhondze entered the wrong books again and was shown a red card for a reckless challenge. Against the run of play, Chinzimu shook the defence line, making a couple of dribbles but her final push went wide in the 73rd minute. Despite attempts for a goal the Eswatini outfit could not penetrate . Meanwhile, the Thom Mkolongo-led side were obvious winners after Ndlela blew the final whistle. If Buffaloes are to have a continued stay in this competition, they must win their two remaining games. They clash with Botswana side Gaborone United tomorrow. This is before meeting Mozambique outfit, UD Lichinga, next Tuesday.
