‘BIRDS’ OFF TO A ‘BEAUTIFUL’ START
PRETORIA – Mbabane Swallows are off to flying start in the CAF Champions League.
The ‘Beautiful Birds’ who are back in Africa’s premier club competition for the first time in six years, brushed aside Mozambique champions Ferroviaro with a 1-0 win before over 100 animated home fans. A lone second half header by Ghana-born defender Karim Madja proved to be a difference in the feisty Confederation of African Football (CAF) Champions League preliminary round first leg clash played here at Lucas Moripe Stadium in Pretoria, last night.
Tighten
Swallows are in the driving seat ahead of the decider in Mozambique, next week. In the return match, they just need to tighten the backdoor to earn a spot in the second preliminary round, where they will face South Africa’s Premiership heavyweights Mamelodi Sundowns. It was a lukewarm start to the game with ‘Birds’ being defensive. Swallows had one goal attempt with the opposition failing to tease Sandanezwe Mathabela between the sticks. The sides could not be separated at the break. On resumption of play, Swallows launched a quick attack that earned them a corner. Bongi ‘Karas’ Magagula delivered a perfect cross, which Madja nodded home, breaking the deadlock in the 47th minute.
Injury
It was then a see-saw, but Clube Ferroviário da Beira eventually dictated the match as ‘Birds’ suffered injury setbacks. Sizolwethu ‘Nunu’ Shabalala was forced out by an injury in the 73rd minute and Siyabonga Zwane stepped in. Ferroviaro also threw everything into attack of the game, but Swallows held onto a narrow win to celebrate a dream start. The jubilant team danced in sheer ecstasy and looked ready to party all night long.
