MBABANE - The Minister of Education and Training, Owen Nxumalo, has promised to cover SNAT members’ accommodation and transport fees in their next Comrades Marathon.

Nxumalo made the pledge on behalf of the ministry, when he was visited by Swaziland National Association of Teachers (SNAT) representatives. The Comrades Marathon runners had a brief meeting at the Ministry of Education and Training yesterday, where the minister highlighted the importance of teachers participating in sports. About four SNAT members visited the Minister to give him brief feedback on their trip and how they performed. Mbuluzi High School Head teacher and Zithande Athletics Club member Siza Dlamini thanked the minister for everything he did for them, as he was also there to give them a warm send-off when they departed for the competition.

“We wanted to pay the minister a visit immediately after the competition, but because of his busy schedule, we could not. We gave him a 2024 Comrades Marathon handbook, a cap together with a comrades T-Shirt as a token of appreciation,” Dlamini said.According to Dlamini, the minister appreciated their hard work as they came back with 10 medals that included one silver, four Robert Mtshali medals and five bronze medals. Medals are categorised based on finishing times in Comrades.

Challenging

A silver is for those enduring the challenging 89km course under 07:30 hours. Those finishing between nine and 10 hours get the Robert Mtshali medal. In 1935, Mtshali became the first unofficial black runner to finish the Comrades Marathon, when he crossed the line in a time of nine hours and 30 minutes. Meanwhile, Ngculwini Athletics Club member and Comrades Marathon runner Madoda Nkambule also extended their gratitude to the minister for celebrating with them. “We acknowledge the minister for allowing us to meet him; we do not take it lightly. His reception was very warm and welcoming as well as the conversation we had. We also appreciate what the ministry is doing for us; their unwavering support will not go unnoticed,” Nkambule said.
