MANZINI — Betting company 8bet has committed a total of E7.5 million in total towards the Trade Fair Cup over the next three years.

This announcement was made by 8bet’s Chief Operations Officer, Belinda Motsa, during the tournament’s launch held yesterday at the Mavuso Trade and Exhibition Centre. The tournament, which last occurred in 2013 prior to its revival last year, has returned under the sponsorship of 8bet. The previous edition was self-sponsored by the Premier League of Eswatini (PLE) to the tune of E1 million, with the victorious team, Green Mamba, receiving E300 000 and the runners-up, Mbabane Swallows, awarded half of that amount.

Last year’s competition featured 14 elite league teams. This year’s edition, set to commence on September 1, with the finals on the eighth, will expand to include 16 teams, including relegated Manzini Wanderers and Denver Sundowns. Promoted Sisonke and Sidwashini United are expected to complete the line-up. “It is our pleasure to contribute to the nation’s social responsibility. The board and management of 8bet recognised this initiative as a vital opportunity to support the Trade Fair Cup. For 2024, 8bet is pledging E2 million to the tournament,” Motsa stated to enthusiastic applause from the audience.

Collaboration

Motsa expressed anticipation for a fruitful and enduring collaboration with the Eswatini Investment and Promotion Authority (EIPA) and the PLE. She further elaborated that the sponsorship will span three years, beginning with E2 million this year and escalating by E500 000 in the subsequent year before reaching E3 million in 2026. Meanwhile, PLE Chairman Polycarp Dlamini remarked that the launch of such a significant Trade Fair competition evoked nostalgia for the vibrant days when football was the highlight of the Trade Fair. “I extend our heartfelt appreciation to His Majesty’s government, particularly the Ministry of Commerce, for their efforts in securing this groundbreaking partnership with 8bet, our esteemed sponsor,” Dlamini said.

He noted that just 10 days into office, the newly-elected PLE Executive was thrilled at the prospect of rekindling the excitement of top-tier football. “We do not shy away from asserting that Premier League football remains the optimal partner for any company seeking to engage with the populace. Our loyal and dynamic constituency is eager to showcase its potential as the ideal corporate ally.”  He confidently assured their partners that they would receive maximum value for their investment, affirming the organisation’s commitment to cultivating a fruitful partnership.

Advocate

“I would like to echo the wise sentiments of His Majesty and advocate for companies to consider collaborating with sports entities in the country. “The PLE is fully prepared to welcome such partnerships,” he stated.  Meanwhile, Mzwandile Mthethwa from the Ministry of Sports, Culture, and Youth Affairs expressed gratitude to the sponsor on behalf of the minister, Bongani Nzima. “Today, we celebrate the launch of the Trade Fair Cup, a tournament that epitomises sportsmanship and unity in Eswatini. I express my heartfelt gratitude to 8bet for their generous E2 million sponsorship, which will enhance our sports scene and empower our youth. This partnership exemplifies the power of collaboration, and I encourage other companies to invest in football. Together, let us champion this initiative and transform the Trade Fair Cup into a symbol of excellence and progress for our nation,” conveyed Mthethwa.

PLE Football Manager Pat Vilakati announced that further details, including fixtures, prize breakdown and logistical considerations, would be disclosed on Friday, when the rules and regulations of the tournament would be presented to the sponsor, Ministry of Sports, and other football stakeholders and teams. EIPA Chairman Theo Hlophe said as hosts of the Eswatini International Trade Fair (EITF) 2024, they are thrilled to collaborate with the Premier League of Eswatini and 8Bet for the Trade Fair Cup 2024.

“Our shared goal is to create an environment that nurtures and develops talent, allowing players to showcase their individual and collective skills. This tournament is not just about competition; it’s a vital part of the Trade and Exposition in Eswatini, fostering growth and unity in our sporting community.” Eswatini Football Association (EFA) President Peter ‘Samora’ Simelane echoed these sentiments, expressing his gratitude to the sponsor for their contributions to the development of sport and urging other companies to similarly support football.
