SENATORS DEMAND GOVT FINANCIAL SUPPORT FOR CAF ENVOYS

LOBAMBA - Senate is demanding the Ministry of Sports, Culture and Youth Affairs to provide financial backing for the CAF envoys.

This is due to the unavailability of an internationally-accredited stadium. The two Confederation of African Football (CAF) inter-club competition representatives are Mbabane Swallows and Nsingizini Hotspurs. The former are competing in the Champions League, while the latter are in the Confederations League. Both teams have hosted their home games outside their territory in South Africa (SA).  ‘Birds’ paid a discounted E45 000 to host at Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium, which is situated in Pretoria. Deputy Senate President Ndumiso Mdluli posed the question to the ministry on whether there was any financial assistance given to the clubs.

Budget

This occurred yesterday afternoon when the Bongani Nzima-led ministry presented its first-quarter performance report and budget to the Senate Sports Portfolio Committee. “I want to hear how these teams that are playing in the CAF inter-club competitions are being assisted. Is the ministry assisting them with resources because we don’t have CAF-accredited venues?” Mdluli asked. He further wished to know if there would not be any surprises at the end of the ongoing facelift at Somhlolo National Stadium. Mdluli noted that times were evolving and new requirements could overtake the already established minimum standards of the 56-year-old structure.  Senator Chief Zabeni expressed similar concerns about whether the renovations, currently at phase four at the soccer mecca, will meet the required standards upon completion. Responding to the questions, the minister said through Microprojects Unit, the company was already on site trying to fast-track the renovations. He said this would also address the CAF envoys’ needs, allowing them to host matches on home soil if they advance to the next stage.

Ensure

He also mentioned that they are working closely with CAF to ensure that the renovations meet the expectations. He emphasised that the renovations are intended to meet the minimum standards set by the continental football governing body. The ministry is also expected to submit written responses to all the questions.
