‘BIRDS’ SET TO HOST SA ‘DOWNS IN MOZAMBIQUE
MBABANE – Capital city giants Mbabane Swallows might return to Mozambique for a CAF assignment.
The reigning MTN Premier League champions might host their Confederation of African Football (CAF) Champions League preliminary round clash against heavyweights Mamelodi Sundowns in Mozambique. Reports suggest that there is an agreement between Swallows and Mozambique with regard to the stadium. However, that is still up for discussion. Teams are supposed to have finalised the issue of a venue by this Thursday. Umkhonto KaShaka, as they are fondly known, had reportedly secured Zimpeto Stadium for their first preliminary round games. It was said that the stadium bill for using this venue was about E130 000. Impeccable sources earlier revealed that due to their good negotiation skills, the giants were to pay a reduced bill by E40 000. Nevertheless, seeing that their opponents were from this country, they were forced to use the iconic Lucas ‘Masterpieces’ Moripe Stadium.
The Eswatini CAF envoys are also said to be in discussions with Mbombela Stadium as one of their options. Hosting a game in Mbombela is estimated to be at least E200 000 for each match, including additional fees. Governor Sandile ‘Beyond 2000’ Zwane confirmed these reports, two days back. He was speaking during Donatus ‘Nkonotja’ Zwane’s show dubbed Monday Therapy on Eswatini Broadcasting and Information Services (EBIS).“Mozambique has agreed to let us host. We are still finalising a possible venue to host Sundowns as a club. We hope to get acquisition of Mbombela Stadium but they are hosting rugby finals on September 14; there are also discussions with regards to Loftus,” Zwane said.Swallows set up a date with the formidable Mamelodi Sundowns after winning 1-0 on aggregate against Mozambique side Ferroviário da Beira, this past Sunday. This forms part of their TotalEnergies Confederation of African Football (CAF) Champions League quest. The thrilling encounter was staged at Lalgy Arena Stadium in Matola.
