TRICKY DRAW FOR ESWATINI IN COSAFA UNDER-20S
MBABANE – Eswatini National Under-20s and Under-17s have learnt their opponents for the 2024 COSAFA championships.
This follows a draw that was conducted by the Council of Southern Africa Football Association (COSAFA) in Maputo this past Thursday. Eswatini Men’s Under-20 were drawn for Group A of the TotalEnergies Confederation of African Football (CAF) Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) U-20s Qualifiers. The Mduduzi ‘Sikhalo’ Nxumalo’s side was drawn against the hosts, Zimbabwe and Botswana. The tournament will be staged in Maputo from September 26 until October 5, 2024. This will be the first-time ever that Mozambique hosts the prestigious competition.
A full fixture is yet to be released by COSAFA. About 12 teams will compete in this year’s regional showpiece. Group B consists of Zambia, Angola, Namibia and Madagascar, while South Africa, Malawi, Comoros and Lesotho are in Group C. Eswatini U-20 Coach, Nxumalo said they will do everything in their power to get positive results, although they will be facing tough opponents.
“We have a very rough draw. If you look at all the three countries we’ll play up against, they seem threatening to us. We are still preparing to at least get positive results,” Nxumalo said.
On another note, COSAFA also conducted the under-17 boys and girls competition draws. Mozambique will also host this tournament, but in December. The boys’ squad will also face off with Mozambique together with Malawi, Lesotho and Angola in the group stages of COSAFA Qualifiers. Meanwhile, Eswatini was placed in Group A of the Women’s COSAFA Qualifiers. Their opponents are Mozambique, Comoros and Lesotho.
