3.4KG FISH EARNS KELLY E21 000
MAGUGA – On a Green Smoke boat, Chadley Kelly reeled in a bass weighing 3.415kg to win the Maguga Challenge, two days ago
He achieved this victory during the two-day cash challenge, which unfolded at the Maguga Dam outside Pigg’s Peak, this past weekend. Bass is a common name shared by many species of ray-finned fish. Kelly, who became E21 000 richer, mentioned that it was a well-organised competition. Kelly also mentioned that they had a good day of angling on Saturday, which was the first day of competition, highlighting the quality they were able to reel in. He further shared that as the first day commenced; they strategised on casting by the banks, which is where he caught the competition winner.
fought
“We fought the fish and managed to net it and put it into the bag. There was a little bit of excitement because we knew the quality of the catch,” expressed Kelly. He also noted that once they caught and weighed the 3.415kg bass, they knew it would be harder for other anglers to catch a bigger one, ultimately placing him in a favourable position to win the top prize.
Kelly, while appreciating the organisation and turnout to the competition highlighted that they wanted to see more competitions like this, especially at Maguga, on top of the participation of young anglers as well.
“We encourage everybody to take this up as a sport and we want younger anglers in our clubs as well as the angling environment in general to ensure the sport continues generation after generation. Kelly was also quizzed on how long it took him to reel in the competition winner, where he revealed that to get it out of the cover it was in and the water took over a minute.
monstrous
The E21 000 cash prize winner also highlighted his teammates, who played a pivotal role in his monstrous catch. “The quality fish that these guys brought in is substantiated by the prizes as we were all in the top ten of the competition,” highlighted Kelly. On the other hand, 10-year-old Carter McKenzie missed out on first place by 0.466kg as his biggest catch weighed in at 2.950kg. However, it is worth mentioning that Carter was the biggest prize winner of last years’ edition of the competition, where he got E13 500 more than he got for second place in the recently concluded edition. Sealing off the top three for the competition was Bunny Fineberg. It is also noteworthy that the second and third-placed anglers in the competition are on the Eswatini Angling National team.
Moreover, President of the Eswatini Angling Association (EAA), Derek Hopf expressed his gratitude to the competition sponsors as well as those who continuously support the EAA.
He also revealed that the competition fell on the same dates as the South African tour, which the majority of the South African anglers participated in, hence missing the Maguga Cash Challenge.
