NEW ASSESSMENT TOOL FOR REFEREES
MBABANE – Action speaks louder than words!
The above adage holds true for the Referees Committee (RC), which has sprung to action to minimise errors during games, under the Premier League of Eswatini (PLE) banner. The RC was seen taking videos of the referees during the recently-concluded 2024 8Bet Trade Fair Cup, which was won by Young Buffaloes, after beating the rejuvenated Moneni Pirates, 2-0, in the finals. The E2 million-sponsored tournament finals were played at the Mavuso Sports Centre, this past Sunday and Dominic Kunene’s charges claimed the E600 000 main prize. Speaking on national television station, the Eswatini TV’s Monday bulletin, Match Commissioner Sipho Dlamini, who was taking the footages on behalf of the RC, revealed the reasons of taking clips during the Trade Fair Cup.

“The reason we took the videos during the games is to have teaching material, to use when educating the referees. We want to show the referee what happened in the match for him or her to improve his or her refereeing,” Dlamini explained. He said after the game, they would sit down with the referee and discuss where they erred, so that they can improve from the mistakes. “We want to monitor the referee’s positioning and decisions as well as everything that pertains to officiating, as our main purpose is to teach the referees,” Dlamini added.
Meanwhile, a referee, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said they welcomed the new idea of monitoring them during games, as it would help them improve.
“We are really happy about the innovation as it will help us correct our mistakes and grow as referees for the betterment of the sport in the country,” the referee said.Meanwhile, Eswatini Football Association (EFA) Vice President Steve Horton, had earlier hinted on the immediate use of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology. Taking the footage is a step towards attaining the goal. This was revealed during the official opening of the Member Associations Referees Instructors Course at the Technical Centre at Lobamba, in July.Africa would have VAR Lite available, as it comes with lower financial constraints. It will perform the same job as the VAR used in the European leagues.
