AUTOMATIC RELEGATION FOR 14TH PLACED NEXT SEASON
MBABANE – Major changes loom next season!
This is after the premier league clubs resolved that the last placed team at the end of the season in the MTN Premier League will automatically get the chop to the MTN National First Division (NFD). An impeccable source close to the Polycarp Dlamini-chaired organisation revealed that the 2025/26 season shall have 16 teams after a resolution by the clubs during the PLE Special General Meeting. The meeting was held in June 8, 2024 at the Sigwaca House. The source said the resolution made by the clubs during the special general meeting cancelled the theory that there shall be no relegation in the ended campaign.
The PLE eventually relegated Denver Sundowns in their recent Extra Ordinary Meeting which was also held at Sigwaca House, confirming that they will implement the dreaded relegation to the deserving clubs. It is worth mentioning that Manzini Wanderers, who finished on position 13 last season are yet to know their fate on whether they will be relegated or not, pending a court case. The case will be heard on September 18, 2024 at the High Court.

The source also disclosed that the clubs resolved that four teams will be promoted from the NFD to the premier league to make a 16-club league in the 2025/26 season.“The teams to occupy the first three positions will get automatic promotion, while the fourth-placed club will participate in the play-offs, with position 13 in the premier league,” the source said. He said the bottom-placed team in the table at the end of this campaign would automatically get the chop. Meanwhile, Acting PLE Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Pat Vilakati highlighted that there would be relegation this season. He made these remarks during the draw of the recently concluded 2024 8Bet Trade Fair Cup, as he gave clarity on the addition of Wanderers and Sundowns in the tournament.
