PM ASKED ON 36-YR-OLD PARTICIPANT AT OLYMPICS
MBABANE – The Editors Forum questioned Prime Minister Russell Dlamini, on the participation of a local 36-year-old athlete in the recent Olympic Games.
This was during a breakfast meeting that was held at Mountain View Hotel yesterday morning. The editors said Botswana opened their eyes by bringing pride to Southern Africa with an excellent gold-winning performance at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Botswana excelled via Letsile Tebogo, aged 21 years, in the men’s 200m sprint. The editors said Eswatini sent an over-aged 36-year-old to compete in the sprint. ‘‘Your Excellency, how did the Ministry of Sport, Culture and Youth Affairs justify how a 36-year-old is the best person to represent the country at the Olympics?’’ read the question. The premier responded saying that participation at the Olympics is on merit. He said the particular athlete is the best sprinter in the country and has a profile attesting to that and there was no reason for him not to participate.
Record
“It should be noted that we do not have a sprinter that has beaten the 36-year-old’s record at the moment. Moreover, by virtue of being the best sprinter in Eswatini, he was given a universality participation card, thus making him a suitable athlete to partake in the Olympic Games,’’ the PM said. He was also asked if he has engaged with the Ministry of Sport, Culture and Youth Affairs to ensure that the country is adequately represented in the next games. “The question on adequate participation is subjective, as it is dependent on the number of athletes that qualify out rightly. Notwithstanding, the implementing organs of the Ministry of Sports, Culture and Youth Affairs (the Sports and Recreation Council and the Olympic Committee) shall be developing soonest a strategy for the incoming Olympiad/4-year plan which commences in January 2025 to July 2028,’’ he responded.
