UNCERTAINTY OVER 16-TEAM LEAGUE NEXT YEAR
MBABANE – Is it going to be a 14-team league next season?
This is a question which the newly-released 2024/25 MTN Premier League Rules and Regulations have answered under Article 11. An impeccable source close to the Premier League of Eswatini (PLE) recently revealed that the elite league teams resolved for a 16-team league in the 2025/26 football season. The source said the clubs resolved that four teams should be promoted from the MTN National First Division (NFD) to the Premier League at the end of the underway campaign, which will be officially kicked off today at the Mavuso Sports Centre.
“We proposed that the top three teams at the end of the season from the NFD get automatic promotion, while the club to finish on the fourth position play with the 13th placed team from the premier league in the play offs,” the source explained. He went on to explain that the bottom-placed team from the Premier League league will automatically go down to the NFD. The resolution, according to the source, was taken and approved during the PLE Special General Meeting, which was held on June 8, 2024, at Sigwaca House.
The MTN Premier League Rules and Regulations 2024/25, however, under Article 11 state that the two clubs that have the least number of points on completion of the league and/or are positioned 13th and 14th in the final log, shall be automatically relegated from the Premier League to the National First Division. “The clubs finishing in the top two positions of the MTN National First Division League shall automatically be promoted to the premier league,” reads part of the article. A PLE Executive member, who commented on condition of anonymity, said the issue of making the league a 16-team was still on the cards, pending its finalisation soon.
“We are still working on the resolution, which was taken by the clubs in June. The rules state clearly in Article 12 that the provision of Article 11 and any other provisions related is subject to any amendments and/or directives or decisions on the structure of the league as may be pronounced by the EFA, where applicable,” he explained. It is worth mentioning that the rules were approved by the Eswatini Football Association (EFA) on September 12, 2024.
